Why We Created the 5 Tops

Every wardrobe is built on foundations, the pieces you don't think twice about reaching for, the ones that layer under, pair with, and quietly hold everything else together. That's what a basic top is supposed to do. So when we set out to create ours, we didn't want to rush it.

Starting with the essentials

We began with three shapes: sleeveless, short sleeve, and long sleeve. Between them, they're designed to take you through every season, and to work with however you actually like to dress, whether that's layered under something or worn completely on its own.

For the neckline, we chose square. It was, to us, the most universally flattering option and a shape that works across body types, and one that moves easily between dressed-up and dressed-down without ever feeling like it's trying too hard.

Building the fabric from nothing

This part took the longest. We designed the fabric from scratch, and organic cotton was non-negotiable from the start. But beyond that, we had a specific set of requirements. It needed enough weight to sit properly, without ever being see-through, and without clinging. That balance, soft but substantial, isn't easy to land on, especially when you're not working from an existing fabric but building one from the ground up.

Adding the classics

Once the core three felt right, we added two more, a polo and a simple top with a Chelsea collar. Both are classic shapes in their own right, both versatile pieces, easy to style and pair with statement pieces as well as a simple pair of jeans.

Why black and white?

We kept the palette as simple as the brief, black and white. The most basic colours there are as they're the easiest colours to pair, style and compliment other pieces currently in your wardrobe.

Looking back, this was one of the more ambitious projects we've taken on, not because the idea was complicated, but because getting something this simple exactly right rarely is!
