There are certain pieces you just don't want to put away when the seasons change. For us, that was the shirt dress, the tied dress and the pinafore. These are three of our most loved summer styles! 

Instead of letting them go quiet until next spring, we decided to bring them back in a fabric built for the colder months.

It started with the shirt dress

The original shirt dress was feminine, easy to style and effortlessly elegant but it was built for warmer weather. We loved it too much to let it disappear for half the year, so we set out to design a version that could carry us through autumn and winter instead.

That meant starting from scratch. We wanted a ribbed knit with real substance...thick enough to feel like a proper winter piece but organic, which meant the fabric itself had to be developed rather than sourced off the shelf. We also wanted stretch, but not too much of it. Enough to move with you, never so much that it clings or turns sheer.

We lengthened the skirt, added sleeves, and decided on merlot and black, the two colours that just are winter to us! The result is a dress that feels as at home at the office as it does at dinner with friends.

Then came the pinafore and the tied dress

Once the fabric was right, the rest fell into place. We looked back at two of our best-loved summer style, the pinafore and the tied dress, and gave them the same treatment.

The pinafore got a longer length, and it's proving to be the most versatile of the three. Thrown over a white t-shirt, it's easy daytime dressing. Worn alone, it holds its own. Dress it up, dress it down, it doesn't ask much of you either way!

The tied dress gained long sleeves, and we spent a while getting the length right, landing on a fit that looks just as good with knee-high boots as it does with Mary Janes, and one that works properly in the office.

Why ribbed knit?

Beyond the warmth, there's something about the way ribbed knit moves with you, which makes all three of these pieces genuinely flattering in a way their summer versions weren't quite built for.
